Continuing the concepts from the Koi section, although smaller than Koi ponds in depth Goldfish ponds are never less dynamic. Goldfish ponds are mainly named so due to the fact that they are normally not greater than 2 feet in depth. Consequently they can have a tendency to be more volatile in regard to speed of temperature and chemistry changes. Thus, making gold fish an excellent choice of fish due to the fact that they are more tolerable of changing conditions. Don’t let this fool you, with some planning Koi can be housed in Gold fish ponds too. Whether Koi will reach their full potential is debatable. Predication can even be prevented with planning straight wall construction, hiding spaces and my favorite final fix (for persistent predators) a small electric fence, not unlike one used to keep rabbits out of the vegetable garden.

Gold fish ponds have some advantages over their deeper big brothers. With a max depth of 2 feet they can be built about any where. Most counties draw that line at 24 inches for open water to be accessible to the general public. A Gold fish pond’s depth can also serves to the water gardening aspect much easier than deeper ponds. Most lilies thrive at 24 inches. Simple bog areas can be made and managed easier while standing 2 feet of water rather than 3 feet. Overall, Gold fish ponds can be very versatile. I have a Goldfish pond, with 17 koi ranging from 30 inches and down (it took some planning). Would I like a larger pond, of course. For now this fits my indoor and outdoor living environment. That is the most important aspect of ponding, whether you build a Goldfish or Koi pond is that it fits your environment and lifestyle.

Biofalls, skimmers, and rocks only work with constant bacteria seeding for the life of the pond.
Proper filtration provides culture space for Nitrifying bacteria to grow naturally free
